This and the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie both felt like substitution for the Fantastic Four. You nailed it.

The 60s Spiderman was a total blast to watch and you could tell there were problems with it. Though! Marvel had the chance to almost buried DC instead DC got to become the dominant player when it came to animation. The 60s version of the adventures of Superman cartoon that was voiced by the original radio Superman Bud Collyer. Until Spiderman came out that there wasn't any competition from Marvel because they decided to be cheap and do their shows like a moving comic books and can you ever tell they did it just like that. The live action adventures of Superman was George Reeves also helped DC dominate the top spot with kids as well. I do not understand why Marvel did not completely back the Spiderman TV show just to balance out everything that DC was doing If they would have given their animators the money and licensing rights they needed, they would've doubled their sales across the board of their comic books. The other animated Marvel show is another example of being cheap and short sighted. Because of the way they did the animation as well that probably hurt them in a lot of ways because nobody talks about their original show, which proves the point . They needed to learn a lesson from Disney, who went all out to support everything about his characters and how they looked. I know Disney made movies. But even if they didn't make the shows every week. It would have been worth it because of the fan base it created.

so Jennifer Hale has now played spider-woman, Mary Jane, Black cat, lady vermin, Rogue, Jean Grey AND madelyne pryor and thats just the marvel cartoons she's done as much for DC, quite a career...

Technically, the Human Torch was a teenager but an equal member of the Fantastic Four and not a sidekick. Speaking of the FF, their show premiered the same day with animation by Hanna-Barbera. No one remembers their theme song.

Thanks for this in-depth look. I came up on this show as reruns in the 70s and I always knew there were a whole bunch of episodes that there WAY OFF but I didn’t know why. Those psychedelic backgrounds and endless silent swinging scenes from seasons 2 and 3 were completely baffling to me as a child. Which maybe proves that kids DO actually pay attention to narrative because they would just make me feel WEiRD and there would be no explanation for why anything was there. And then they’d show a season one episode in the random mix and I’d be back on board. I don’t mind “dark” cartoons for kids that don’t always have happy endings but I don’t think half-assed cheap surrealism works. The only thing giving seasons two and three any grounding is actually Paul’s voice work as Spider-Man. He definitely never phoned it in.

I saw "Revolt in the Fifth Dimension" back in the 1970s on a local Pennsylvania UHF channel that reran the series and I LOVED it! Now I want to see the original version, "Dementia 5" from "Rocket Robin Hood"!

This show was my introduction to Spider-Man and I will never get tired of it. Yeah shows like Spectacular Spider-Man did some things better than this show did, but this introduced so many different characters and villains from the comics that had never been seen before and told a great story. We didn't need to see his origin told or his high school era, he came fully formed but we still have a progression of the character to adulthood. Which is something that the comics are incapable of doing ever since one more day. When I read the comics, I always hear Christopher Barnes voice as Spider-Man.

I loved it as a kid. I loved his dry humor. When i watched years later when it came out on dvd, I found it kind of boring and the animation horrible.

Dated it might be, but I loved it. I absolutely loved this style of animation as it was like watching your favourite comic book characters come alive. Many people out there will dismiss these classic cartoons as a lot of stills were constantly re-used and it became repetitive but to be honest I would definitely take these old cartoons over the the cgi influenced crap that they've been making since the early 2000's, it's just so depressing!!! Another great factor about these type of cartoons is the atmosphere that they created, that sinister music playing in the background, it just ramped up the tension. Those little touches make all the difference. I still enjoy watching these, however.......I did lose interest when they started to feature the " Psychedelic " era, they were just dire, we never even got to see the regular villians anymore and the show just wasn't the same anymore. Yes I admit the storylines and actions were questionable, either by the silly villians and even by Spiderman himself. They definitely took creative liberties when it came to Spiderman being able to spin any kind of object with his webbing, I still remember when he was able to fight & win a sword fight with the villians by spinning himself a perfect looking sword?? But this is a cartoon for God's Sake and not a factual documentary, it's purely for entertainment purposes and it still continues to do that. Shows like this, Johnny Quest, Tarzan Lord Of The Jungle, The Space Sentinels, The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Spiderman & His Amazing Friends, Spiderman 5000, Xmen & The Spiderman series both reboots from 1991, Flash Gordon, Dundgeons & Dragons, He- Man & The Spiderwoman Animated show from the late 1980's, for me, despite their flaws, I still love them, and it's best not to read too much into them, just sit back and enjoy them, for enjoyment's sake.

Vulture's design I can kinda forgive. My biggest gripe with that design however is the wings looking like bug wings. Kraven's hair and stuff is okay but the metal arm is really _meh_ and im not really a fan of it. The fur makes sense but the teeth and messed up eye is a bit much. Iron Man looks okay-ish. The Hulk looks like the hunchback of hunchback of notre dame. _Of course Black Widow has a shaved head._ ...Wait...I noticed something, what does this show have against women with long hair? All of the hair is either cut really short or in a bun. Did.... did they stiff on the hair because they wanted to save money on animating/drawing hair?

I wasn't even able to watch this show long enough to know what the story was like. I looked at it for 10 seconds, realized that there was _NO_ shading on anything and said 'nah.' It has potential but it didn't receive enough love in the right places.
